About the Presenter:
Sylvia L. Groth is a Wheaton College graduate who made the decision to become a surgeon after performing postgraduate volunteer ocular medical mission work in the Central Highlands of Guatemala in 2006 and 2007. She is currently a third year medical student at the University of Minnesota. Her special interests include international ophthalmology and ocular trauma. During the past year Ms. Groth has successfully coauthored 3 full-length articles on ballistic and supercomputer modeling of ocular trauma published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, as well as a paper on small incision insertion of artificial ocular prostheses in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. At the University of Minnesota she served as an officer in three organizations; Student Sight Savers, the Surgery Interest Group, and the Wilderness Health Society. Sylvia was a Southern California junior golf champion, and 4-year all-conference collegiate golfer, who also enjoys distance running and cycling. Ms. Groth intends to apply for Ophthalmology residency this Autumn.
