DR.SOOSAN JACOB
Dr. Soosan Jacob, MS, DNB, FRCS (Glasg), MNAMS, FERC is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of the Department of Orbit & Oculoplasty and Cornea & Refractive Surgery in Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai, India. She is a gold medalist in Ophthalmology. She has won many international awards for her video films at prestigious international conferences in the USA (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology), Europe (World Ophthalmology Conference, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery), has won the prestigious Golden Apple award for Most Outstanding Case in Complications and Challenging Cases Symposium in Cataract Surgery twice at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery 2008 and 2010 as well as the Special Gold Medal of the Indian Intra-ocular Implant and Refractive Society (IIRSI). Her article on "Why I became an Ophthalmologist" received a special Certificate of Appreciation at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery 2008 and was published in the EuroTimes. She has also won the prestigious John Henahan award for Young Ophthalmologist given by EuroTimes at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery 2011.
She is a noted speaker and has been invited to conduct courses and deliver lectures in numerous national and international conferences. She has special interest in cutting edge surgical techniques for cataract, cornea, glaucoma, and refractive surgery including intra-stromal ring segments, ocular surface reconstruction, subluxated cataracts, new refractive solutions and so on.
Dr.Jacob was the first to bring out the concept of Anterior segment transplantation. She also devised a new technique - the Jacob-Agarwal technique of supra-brow single stab incision ptosis surgery - where in the sling surgery can be done with primarily a one stab incision rather than three. She has devised two new techniques – the Turnaround technique and the Double Pass Turnaround technique for successful completion of Femtosecond laser assisted Intacs implantation in eyes with false channel dissection for both symmetric and asymmetric Intacs segments, the video on which has also won international awards. She has also described a new technique of Relaxing Descemetotomy for Tractional Descemet’s Membrane Detachment in the cornea. She has proposed a new classification system for Descemet’s detachments (DD) into rhegmatogenous, tractional and exudative DD akin to retinal detachments and also proposed a treatment algorithm for the same. She has designed a new intra-ocular device - the Glued Endo-Capsular Ring which makes possible safe phacoemulsification in subluxated cataracts and provides good intra-operative and post-operative safety and stability.
She has authored numerous peer reviewed publications as well as more than 185 chapters in 28 textbooks by international and national publishers and is also the editor for 10 textbooks in Ophthalmology. She is a reviewer for prestigious journals like Eye and Journal of Ophthalmology. She is amongst the senior faculty and a trainer for the DNB (Diplomate of National Board) postgraduate training programme and phacoemulsification training programme for overseas doctors. She heads the National as well as International training programme in the Institute for Cornea & Refractive and Oculoplastics.
She is on the editorial board of the Ocular Surgery News – Asia Pacific Edition, and is a committee member of the ISRS Multi-media Library Editorial Board of the American Academy of Ophthalmology – International Society of Refractive Surgery. She has also served as an executive committee member of the Indian Intra-ocular Implant and Refractive Society from 2009-2011.
